From Packaging to Leather: How Mycelium Is Replacing Plastic

The plastic pollution crisis has inspired scientists and entrepreneurs to look to nature for alternatives — and they have found an unlikely hero in mycelium. The same fungal networks that decompose fallen leaves in forests are now being grown into packaging, insulation, leather, and even building materials. Mycelium-based products are biodegradable, carbon-negative, and grown — not manufactured.

How Mycelium Materials Work

The process is elegantly simple. Agricultural waste (hemp husks, corn stalks, sawdust) is placed in a mold and inoculated with mushroom spawn. The mycelium grows through the substrate, binding it together into a solid mass that takes the shape of the mold. After 5-7 days of growth, the material is dried to stop growth and produce a lightweight, rigid, biodegradable product.

No energy-intensive manufacturing. No petroleum. No toxic chemicals. Just fungi doing what they do — growing and binding organic matter together.

Mycelium Packaging

The most commercially mature mycelium product is packaging. Ecovative Design, based in New York, produces MycoComposite — a mycelium-based packaging material that replaces expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam). Dell has used it to package servers, IKEA has tested it for furniture packaging, and other companies are adopting it for fragile item protection.

The advantages are significant:

  • Biodegradable: Composts fully in 45 days, compared to 500+ years for Styrofoam
  • Cost-competitive: At scale, mycelium packaging costs the same or less than molded Styrofoam
  • Carbon-negative: The process absorbs CO2 rather than emitting it
  • Customizable: Can be grown into any shape or size
  • Naturally insulating: Provides thermal and acoustic insulation

Mushroom Leather

The fashion industry is one of the world’s most polluting sectors, and animal leather is particularly resource-intensive. Mycelium leather offers a sustainable alternative.

Bolt Threads produces Mylo, a mycelium-based leather used by Stella McCartney, Adidas, and Lululemon. The process grows mycelium in vertical farms under controlled conditions, producing sheets of material in weeks rather than the years required to raise cattle.

The environmental impact is dramatic:

  • Water: 99% less water than animal leather
  • CO2: 80% less carbon emissions
  • Land: Grown in vertical farms, requiring minimal land
  • Chemicals: No toxic tanning agents
  • Biodegradable: Composts at end of life

Mycelium Construction Materials

Phil Ross, an artist and mycologist, has pioneered “mycotecture” — building structures from mycelium. Mycelium bricks are fire-resistant, self-healing, and carbon-negative. They require no firing (unlike clay bricks, which are baked at 1,000+ degrees) and grow at room temperature.

The Hy-Fi tower, an installation at MoMA PS1 in New York, was built entirely from mycelium bricks — three stories tall and completely composted at end of life.

Mycelium Insulation

Mycelium insulation panels offer R-values comparable to fiberglass or foam insulation, with the added benefits of being fire-resistant, naturally pest-repellent, and fully biodegradable. Companies like Mogu are producing mycelium acoustic panels for interior design — they absorb sound, regulate humidity, and can be composted when renovated.

The Bigger Picture

Mycelium materials represent a fundamental shift in how we think about manufacturing. Instead of extracting raw materials, processing them with energy and chemicals, and disposing of them in landfills, we can grow materials from waste, use them, and return them to the soil. This is circular design — the mycelial approach to production.

The market is responding. The global mycelium market is projected to reach $4.5 billion by 2030, driven by packaging, leather, and construction applications. As scale increases, costs will decrease, making mycelium products competitive with conventional materials across more categories.
